Excursion to the Container Terminals in the harbour of Hamburg.
The harbour of Hamburg is the biggest in germany, the third biggest in europe, but the second biggest container port in europe. In 2006 the port handled 8.86 million TEU (20 feet container equivalents) for export and import, that were about 9.6 percent more TEU than in the year before. ISL (Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, Germany) expects the port to serve up to 18.1 million TEU in 2015, which shows the strong growth in numbers. Since 97.7 percent of general cargo is shipped in containers, automated handling of containers is key to a successful operation of the port. To provide the infrastructure to handle this amount of goods the port is investing in additional container terminals, which enlarge its capacity. The latest terminal is state-of-the-art for its automatic handling of containers.
This excursion is fully booked and cannot accept further participants.
